What causes limescale?
Lime scale is caused by “hard water. The minerals in the water, such as calcium and magnesium, deposit on surfaces such as your shower faucet, tiles or glass walls. The stubborn deposits have a dull, white color and are very difficult to permanently remove with tap water.
Why be careful with vinegar?
Cleaning vinegar is inexpensive and a lot of families use it as a home gardening remedy. Still, it is important to pay attention when using vinegar to remove limescale.
The acidic nature of vinegar can corrode the protective coating or chrome finish of a shower faucet. This will remove the shiny effect and cause permanent damage to the faucet. Also be careful around rubber seals that can dry out or dissolve from the use of vinegar, that way you avoid leaks.

Some safe alternatives for removing limescale
- Probiotic cleaning products: they not only clean thoroughly, but protect yourself and the materials in your bathroom.
- Mild scale removers: there are products suitable for descaling sensitive surfaces. Be sure to check if using those products is safe for the materials in your bathroom.
- Baking soda and water: mix baking soda and water, apply to the scale, let it soak in and rinse off.
Can you prevent limescale?
A few helpful tips can prevent limescale build-up. To prevent water from drying up and leaving white deposits, it’s best to dry your faucet and shower walls after each use. Also, clean regularly with a mild detergent. Do you really want to address the cause of hard water? Then consider installing a water softener to reduce or even eliminate the amount of calcium in your water.
