Ironing a shirt without creases is how you do it
Some practical tips
Before you begin, it’s best to review the following tips. This will make ironing a shirt even smoother!
- Preferably use a steam iron.
- Undo all the buttons.
- Check the indicated ironing temperature on the label (*). Ironing too hot may damage the fabric.
- Iron the shirt preferably on the inside to avoid discoloration or iron stains.
- Get out the starch and give your shirt an even tighter look.
- Iron the shirt while it is still slightly damp. Creases and wrinkles are easy to iron that way.
- Immediately hang the ironed shirt on a hanger and fasten the top button.
(*) The number of dots in the iron symbol indicates how hot you may iron the shirt: 1 dot = max. 110°C – 2 dots = max. 150°C – 3 dots = max. 200°C
Ironing a shirt in 4 steps
Step 1: the collar and shoulders
If you want to iron a shirt, it is best to start with the collar and the fabric at shoulder level. Unfold the collar and iron it on both sides. Fold the collar into the right shape and iron in the crease. Pull the shoulder of the shirt over the end of the ironing board and go over it with your iron. You can move the shirt itself along a bit to get all the creases out. Do the same with the other shoulder.
Step 2: the sleeves
Definitely “another pair of sleeves” those pesky sleeves! Lay the sleeve spread out and smooth it a bit with the flat hand. Move the iron from the seam of the shoulder downward. Do this on both sides, with each sleeve.
Step 3: the cuffs
You can iron the cuffs (ends of the sleeves) in different ways. You can do this like the sleeves: by passing the iron over them from the seam of the sleeve outward. Tip: with a rolled up towel in the sleeve, it is sometimes easier to get the creases out of the cuffs. Use the tip of the iron to get rid of the smallest pleats.
Step 4: the rest of the shirt
The front and back are relatively easy to iron. You can iron over the buttons if you iron on the inside. Glide gently from one side to the other and use the steam function for stubborn creases and wrinkles. With the tip of the iron, you can also iron the fabric between the buttons briefly on the outside for extra tight results.
