Cleaning furniture: tips to keep your interior sparkling clean

Cleaning furniture: tips to keep your interior sparkling clean

TL;DR | Cleaning furniture requires a tailored approach for each type of material (fabric, leather and wood). L&S Housekeeping shares some practical tips and products for a safe and sustainable approach.

Furniture forms the foundation of your interior but it’s often difficult to maintain, especially when it comes to fabric, leather or wooden pieces. Dust, (animal) hair and the daily use of your furniture can leave marks faster than you might think. Cleaning furniture therefore requires a careful approach, adapted to the type of material.

In this blog we share some practical tips to keep your furniture clean efficiently and safely.

Fabric furniture: act quickly in case of stains

Fabric sofas bring cosiness into your home but attract dirt and dust more easily. It is therefore important to vacuum them regularly using the right attachment, especially in the seams and corners where dirt easily accumulates. This prevents dirt from settling in the fabric.

Have you made a stain? Acting quickly is key: gently dab the stain with a cloth, use lukewarm water and don’t rub.

Tip: Use natural cleaning products such as probiotic detergents to clean furniture. They are harmless to humans and animals and remain active on the surface even after use. By using probiotics, you prevent aggressive traditional cleaning products from damaging your furniture. Moreover, aggressive cleaning products can discolour furniture or damage surfaces.

Leather furniture: cleaning and nourishing

Cleaning leather furniture requires a different method. Clean them with a soft, slightly damp cloth and a special leather cleaner. Treat the leather with a nourishing leather cream at least once a quarter. This keeps it supple, retains its natural shine and prevents cracks or tears.

Tip: Do not place leather furniture too close to a heat source or in direct sunlight. Too high temperatures or UV radiation can cause leather to dry out and discolour faster.

Wooden furniture: natural and gentle

Want to clean your wooden furniture without causing damage? Dust them with a soft, dry cloth to avoid scratches. For a more thorough cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth with mild soap, followed by a dry cloth. Beware, excessive use of water can warp the wood.

Tip: occasionally refresh your wooden furniture with a natural wood oil or furniture wax. This protects the surface from drying out and preserves its warm appearance.

Regular maintenance pays off

Just like floors, your furniture also deserves a regular place in your cleaning schedule. Keep your furniture fresh and cared for with regular maintenance and extend its lifespan.
