Some general tips for fighting dust mites
Warm and humid rooms, that’s where dust mites prefer to be. Such as in the bedroom, especially if it is inadequately ventilated and cleaned. If you don’t want to give house dust mites a chance, you start by keeping moisture and dust out. Specifically, it is best to pay sufficient attention to the following:
- Bedroom cleaning, including bedding and mattress: in addition to dusting, vacuuming and mopping, it is important to wash bedding. Preferably weekly and at 60°C. Not only the sheets, but also pillows, plaids, stuffed animals, … (and if possible the comforter). Also don’t forget to clean the mattress, e.g. by vacuuming it. By the way, a washable mattress and pillow protector is always a good idea.
- Ventilate room and bed: preferably open the windows well in the morning and evening so that the bedroom is well aired. The kitchen and bathroom may certainly do the same. Do not make the bed but leave it open so that the moisture evaporates.
- Leave unnecessary items behind: try to put as few plants, carpets or other items in the bedroom as possible. In short, anything that catches too much dust.
- Preferably no pets in bed: house dust mites feed on human and animal dander and hair. Therefore, it is better not to have your pet in the bedroom or on the bed.
- Replace old materials: a mattress that has lasted more than 10 years or old curtains and carpets are better replaced with a new one.
- Try drying your clothes outside: or possibly in the dryer.
