Fix the color with vinegar
Vinegar helps textiles hold their color better. So feel free to dip those new jeans overnight in a bucket of cold water and a splash of vinegar. Because there’s nothing more annoying than a pair of (dark) jeans that are still giving off color.
Washing new jeans: do’s and don’ts
It’s always smart to wash your new jeans first. But take note:
- Turn the pants inside out.
- Close the zipper and/or button(s).
- Wash at no more than 30°C. Higher temperatures may reduce stretch quality and/or affect color faster.
- Do not wash with other – especially lightweight – garments.
- Use a good detergent e.g. special for dark laundry, colorfast, …
- Use an anti-color bleed-through cloth if necessary (this prevents colors from bleeding through if you were to wash mixed anyway).
Have you already soaked your jeans in water with vinegar (see first tip) and noticed that the color is still rubs off? Then regularly add some vinegar to the wash. Directly in the drum, via the dosing tray or together with the detergent in the cap.
Not only is the method of washing important in keeping your jeans in good condition, the method of drying also counts:
- Never put jeans in the dryer as this can damage the fabric and most importantly shrink it.
- Let dry on a wash rack. Preferably indoors and certainly not in full sun (greater risk of discoloration).
Wash your new jeans as little as possible
It may sound contradictory, but it is best to wash new jeans as little as possible. So try to avoid hard stains and air your jeans regularly to get certain odors out. Leaving them overnight (safely stored in a bag or pillowcase) in the freezer also helps eliminate odors and especially bacteria.
