Removing limescale: some alternatives to vinegar
Removing limescale is a common challenge in the bathroom. While cleaning vinegar is often seen as a miracle solution, it is not always the best or safest option for removing buildup. Discover our alternatives for sparkling results.
What causes limescale?
Limescale forms due to “hard water.” The minerals in water, such as calcium and magnesium, settle on surfaces like your shower tap, tiles, or glass walls. This stubborn buildup has a dull, white color and is difficult to remove permanently using tap water alone.
Why be careful with vinegar?
Cleaning vinegar is cheap and a lot of families use it as a common cleaning agent. Nevertheless, it is important to be careful when using vinegar to remove limescale.
The acidic nature of vinegar can damage the protective layer or chrome finish on a shower tap, causing the shiny effect to fade and leaving permanent damage. Also be careful around rubber seals that can dry out or dissolve from using vinegar, that way you avoid leaks.
Did you know our housekeepers are not allowed to use cleaning vinegar? This is because prolonged and frequent use can be harmful to your health. We prefer using probiotic cleaning products.
Safe alternatives for removing limescale
- Probiotic cleaning products: These clean thoroughly while protecting both you and the materials in your bathroom.
- Gentle limescale removers: There are products specifically designed for descaling delicate surfaces. Always check if these products are safe for your bathroom materials.
- Baking soda and water: Mix baking soda with water, apply it to the limescale, let it soak in, and rinse off.
Can you prevent limescale?
A few handy tips can help prevent limescale. To avoid water drying and leaving white stains, dry your tap and shower walls after every use. Clean regularly with a mild cleaning product. If you want to tackle the root cause of hard water, consider installing a water softener to reduce or eliminate limescale in your water.
